31 October 2016

International comparison of universities and subject rankings – Ruperto Carola places first in three subject areas

In the recently published Best Global Universities Ranking, Heidelberg University ranked second among universities in Germany. After Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (57th), Heidelberg University (68th), followed by the Technical University of Munich (86th) and Berlin's Humboldt University (93rd), is one of four German universities among the world's top 100. Selected subject areas are also rated in addition to the universities overall. Ruperto Carola fared extremely well in that respect, too, placing among the top three in a total of nine academic disciplines in Germany. Among them, it received three first-place rankings.

In neuroscience/behaviour, astronomy and medicine, Heidelberg ranks first among the German universities. In addition, Ruperto Carola took second or third place in Germany in molecular biology/genetics, pharmacology/toxicology, biology/biochemistry, psychiatry/psychology and physics. Heidelberg ranks among the world's top 100 universities in a total of eleven subject areas.

Evaluation criteria include research reputation and publications. A total of twelve variously weighted indicators are used to generate the ranking, among them the university's global and regional research reputation and a number of factors specific to citations and publications. Unlike in previous years, this third issue of the ranking no longer includes an indicator for PhD graduates. One thousand universities were evaluated for the Best Global Universities Ranking on the basis of data from Clarivate Analytics. The ranking list is published by the American media company, U.S. News & World Report.
